What this skill covers
This skill covers why a passage is structured or worded a certain way (a specific detail's function, not just its content) and how two passages on a related topic agree, disagree, or add to each other.
For paired-passage questions, first summarize each passage's main point separately in your own words — most wrong answers only get one of the two passages right.
Worked examples
Example 1
In a passage about a scientist's early failed experiment, the author includes the detail that she "kept her original, flawed notebook on her desk for the rest of her career." This detail mainly serves to
A. suggest that she valued remembering the failure as part of her later success.
B. prove that she never improved her methods.
C. show that she was disorganized.
D. indicate she distrusted her own later results.
Why: The detail highlights a deliberate, meaningful choice (keeping it visible for her whole career), which best supports valuing the failure as part of her story, not disorganization or distrust.
Example 2
Passage A argues that remote work increases employee productivity. Passage B agrees productivity can rise but notes that team collaboration often suffers. What is the relationship between the two passages?
A. Passage B partially agrees with Passage A while raising an additional concern.
B. Passage B completely contradicts Passage A.
C. The passages discuss unrelated topics.
D. Passage A and Passage B reach identical conclusions with no differences.
Why: Passage B accepts the productivity point but adds a distinct concern — partial agreement plus a new consideration, not outright contradiction or a topic mismatch.
