What this skill covers
This is the foundation of ACT Reading: can you state what a passage is mainly about, find the specific line that supports a claim, and draw a conclusion that follows from the passage without overreaching?
Inference questions are not invitations to guess freely — the correct inference is the smallest, most directly supported step beyond what's explicitly stated, not the most interesting or dramatic possibility.
Worked examples
Example 1
A passage describes a small town library that began offering free tax-preparation help each spring, and that the program's volunteers were mostly retired accountants from the area. Which choice best states the main idea?
A. A local library launched a tax-help program staffed largely by retired accountants.
B. Retired accountants no longer work in any capacity.
C. The library replaced all of its other programs with tax help.
D. Tax preparation is the most important library service.
Why: This restates the passage's two central facts — what the program is and who runs it — without adding anything the passage doesn't say.
Example 2
Based on a passage stating that attendance at the town's weekly farmers market roughly doubled after it moved to a more central location, which inference is best supported?
A. The market's location was likely a factor affecting how many people attended.
B. The market's products became twice as good.
C. No one attended the market before it moved.
D. The market will double in size again next year.
Why: This stays close to the stated cause-and-effect (location change, attendance change) without predicting the future or exaggerating the original claim.
