ACT Production of Writing

Whether a sentence, paragraph, or essay accomplishes its stated purpose, stays on topic, and is organized logically.

What this skill covers

Production of Writing questions step back from individual sentences to ask whether a paragraph or the essay as a whole achieves a specific purpose — often literally asking "Should this sentence be added/kept/deleted?" or "Where should this sentence be placed?"

The key habit is reading past the sentence in question to check what the surrounding paragraph is actually about; a factually true, well-written sentence can still be the wrong answer if it doesn't belong in that specific paragraph.

Worked examples

Example 1
A paragraph describes how a small bakery sources local ingredients. The writer is considering adding this sentence: "The bakery's owner also enjoys hiking on weekends." Should the writer make this addition?
A. No, because it is irrelevant to the paragraph's focus on ingredient sourcing.
B. Yes, because it adds interesting personal detail.
C. Yes, because all essays benefit from more sentences.
D. No, because the sentence is grammatically incorrect.
Why: The sentence is grammatically fine but unrelated to the paragraph's actual topic — relevance to the paragraph's focus, not general interest, is what the question tests.
Example 2
Which sentence would most logically conclude a paragraph describing the steps of a science experiment?
A. After recording the final measurements, the team compared their results to the original hypothesis.
B. Experiments have been conducted for centuries.
C. The team enjoyed working together.
D. Science is an important school subject.
Why: A concluding sentence for a step-by-step paragraph should complete the sequence of actions already described, not introduce an unrelated general statement.
