What this skill covers

Advanced Math moves beyond straight lines into quadratics, exponents, and function notation. The single most common operation tested is substitution: plug a given value into f(x) and simplify carefully using order of operations.

For "which expression is equivalent" questions, factoring or expanding fully — rather than trying to eyeball the answer — is the reliable path, since wrong choices are deliberately built to look plausible at a glance.

Worked examples

Example 1
For f(x) = x² + 3x, what is f(4)?
A. 28
B. 19
C. 12
D. 16
Why: Substitute 4: 4² + 3(4) = 16 + 12 = 28 — the most common error is stopping after squaring and forgetting the second term.
Example 2
Which expression is equivalent to x² − 7x + 12?
A. (x − 3)(x − 4)
B. (x + 3)(x + 4)
C. (x − 2)(x − 6)
D. (x − 7)(x + 12)
Why: Two numbers that multiply to 12 and add to 7 are 3 and 4, so the trinomial factors as (x − 3)(x − 4) — checking both the product and the sum catches wrong-pair distractors.
