What this skill covers

Transition questions test whether you can name the actual logical relationship between two sentences — contrast, cause-and-effect, example, addition, or similarity — before picking a word. Guessing based on which word "sounds right" is the most common way to miss these.

Rhetorical synthesis questions give you a set of bullet-point notes and a specific stated goal (e.g., "emphasize the scale of the project"). The correct choice uses only the notes that serve that exact goal — extra accurate information that doesn't serve the stated goal is still a wrong answer.

Worked examples

Example 1
The bridge's original design used lightweight materials to reduce cost. ______, those materials proved less durable in high winds.
A. For example
B. However
C. Similarly
D. As a result
Why: The second sentence contrasts the cost benefit with a durability problem, so "However" is the only word that signals contrast rather than example, similarity, or a result.
Example 2
A student wants to emphasize how quickly a fundraiser succeeded. Notes: • The goal was $5,000. • The goal was reached in 6 hours. • Over 200 people donated. Which choice best accomplishes this goal?
A. The fundraiser reached its $5,000 goal in just 6 hours.
B. Over 200 people donated to the fundraiser.
C. The fundraiser had a goal and received donations.
D. Fundraisers can be a good way to raise money.
Why: Only this choice combines the goal amount and the 6-hour timeframe — the two facts that actually demonstrate speed, which is the stated goal.
