TSI Essay Practice — Revision & Editing Skills

Choosing the revision that most improves a draft paragraph's organization, and strengthening a weak sentence so it directly supports the essay's thesis.

What this skill covers

Separate from the timed essay itself, TSIA2 includes multiple-choice questions built around a student's draft paragraph. These ask which revision best improves organization, adds a missing transition, or strengthens a sentence so it actually supports the essay's main claim.

The strongest revision is usually the most specific, on-topic option — vague or off-topic sentences rarely improve a paragraph, even when they sound reasonable on their own.

Worked examples

Example 1
A student's paragraph lists three benefits of community gardens but has no clear transition between the second and third point. Which revision best improves the paragraph's organization?
A. Delete the third point entirely.
B. Move the third point to the very beginning of the essay.
C. Repeat the first point instead of introducing a new one.
D. Insert a transition phrase, such as "In addition to reducing food costs, community gardens also...," before the third point.
Why: Adding a clear transition connects the existing ideas without cutting real content or restructuring the whole paragraph unnecessarily.
Example 2
Which revision of the underlined sentence most directly strengthens an essay arguing that after-school programs improve student attendance?
Original: "After-school programs are popular with students."
A. "Schools that added after-school programs saw average daily attendance rise within a year."
B. "After-school programs happen after the school day ends."
C. "Many students enjoy sports and clubs."
D. "Attendance policies vary between schools."
Why: This choice gives a specific, on-topic claim directly tied to attendance — exactly what the thesis needs. The others are true statements that don't address attendance at all.
