TSI Reading Practice Test — Literary Text Analysis

Identifying theme, tone, and character motivation in short fiction and poetry passages — and choosing the interpretation the text actually supports.

What this skill covers

TSIA2 reading also includes short literary passages — fiction excerpts and poetry — separate from the informational, fact-based passages. These questions ask what a passage suggests about a character, the tone or mood a passage creates, or what a figurative phrase (a simile or metaphor) is really saying.

The correct answer stays close to what the passage actually shows through action, word choice, or description — not what seems generally true about people or situations.

Worked examples

Example 1
Elena had rehearsed the apology a dozen times on the walk over, but standing at her sister's door, every version disappeared. She knocked anyway.
What does this passage suggest about Elena?
A. She regrets going to her sister's house.
B. She is nervous but chooses to face the difficult conversation anyway.
C. She has decided not to apologize.
D. She is confident about what she will say.
Why: Losing her rehearsed words shows nervousness, but knocking "anyway" shows she goes through with the conversation despite that — the passage supports both parts of this choice, not just one.
Example 2
The old house sagged like a tired shoulder, its paint long since given up on holding any color at all.
The phrase "sagged like a tired shoulder" mainly conveys that the house is...
A. the site of a recent injury.
B. freshly painted in a single color.
C. worn down and neglected, compared to human weariness.
D. recently collapsed and unsafe to enter.
Why: This is a simile: comparing the house's sag to a "tired shoulder" figuratively conveys age and neglect. It does not literally mean the house collapsed or that anyone was hurt.
