What this skill covers
This skill covers summarizing a small data set (mean, median) and computing straightforward probabilities from a described situation, such as selecting an item at random from a known group.
For median questions, the values must be sorted from least to greatest before picking the middle one — a common error is finding the middle position of the list in its original, unsorted order.
Worked examples
Example 1
The data set is 7, 12, 9, 15, 11. What is the median?
A. 11
B. 9
C. 12
D. 10.8
Why: Sorted, the values are 7, 9, 11, 12, 15 — the middle value is 11. (10.8 is the mean, a common mix-up with the median.)
Example 2
A jar contains 5 yellow, 3 red, and 2 blue candies. What is the probability of selecting a blue candy at random?
A. 2/10
B. 2/5
C. 3/10
D. 5/10
Why: There are 10 candies total and 2 are blue, so the probability is 2/10 (which simplifies to 1/5) — always divide by the total, not by one of the other colors.
