What this skill covers
TSIA2's reading-focused ELAR questions test whether you can accurately summarize what a short passage is mainly about, point to the specific sentence that supports a claim, and draw a conclusion that stays within what the passage actually supports.
The safest inference is the smallest reasonable step beyond the text — if an answer choice requires assuming something the passage never mentions, it's very likely a wrong answer, no matter how plausible it sounds in general.
Worked examples
Example 1
A passage describes how a hospital reduced patient wait times by adding a digital check-in kiosk, and that patient satisfaction scores rose in the months afterward. Which choice best states the main idea?
A. Adding a check-in kiosk was associated with shorter waits and higher patient satisfaction.
B. The hospital eliminated all patient wait times.
C. Patient satisfaction depends only on wait times.
D. The kiosk replaced all hospital staff.
Why: This combines both reported findings — shorter waits and higher satisfaction — without overstating either one.
Example 2
Based on a passage noting that a company's customer complaints dropped sharply after it started sending order-confirmation texts, which inference is most reasonable?
A. Clearer communication about orders may have reduced customer confusion or concern.
B. The company stopped taking orders.
C. Customers no longer buy from the company.
D. The texts guarantee zero future complaints.
Why: This draws a modest, plausible connection between the change and the outcome without claiming certainty or an unsupported guarantee.
